A Little Test

With exactly one week to the Primitive Trek, Amy, Samantha, Casey and I headed out for a “Test Trek”. The rules/goals were simple; carry only the items we will have on the Trek and use them.

Packs and Bow
A few of our packs with bow and arrows for hunting

Even though the pack frames had been completed quite a while ago, the straps and pack bags were only recently finished. Although we initially considered adding padding to the lower bar on the packs, we discovered that with some strap and “waist belt” (really just a rope) adjustments it was reasonably comfortable. We also cooked a simple meal using the limited equipment we’re bringing with fine success. The biggest issue with the cooking/food will simply be the lack of variety over the 2-3 days we’ll be camping.

Although there was no rain on the day we hiked, we did try out a possible configuration for our rain fly. Securing the fly used far less rope than we anticipated, and although any end configuration will vary depending on the available trees, we should practice setup more often. More than likely there are some configurations that work better than others.

Overall the “test trek” went quite well. Easily 90% of our equipment is completed, and the remaining 10% is nothing more than “loose ends”. It would have been entirely possible for us to have pulled off Trek with the equipment we had on Saturday.
