Close Call
My original thought was that this blog would end once the Trek had been completed. However, we continue to get a large number of people viewing this blog and inquiring about Keira so I will keep it going as best I can.
One week before Thanksgiving can be a hectic time for anyone; ours was a little more so than most.
Just before Thanksgiving Keira had developed a cold, which the doctors quickly attacked with antibiotics. Things were looking like they were going well, when Keira started having digestion problems.
Unfortunately, as is often the case with antibiotics, they also destroyed the good bacteria in her GI tract. Knowing that this is common she was also being given yogurt to help restore those bacteria. This time, things were not so successful. Keira continued to have GI problems and became backed up to the point Paige had to take her to the hospital. Several medications, and fluid combinations were tried but neither liquids nor solids were coming out. And of course at this stage Keira was not the least bit interested in taking anything more in.
Fearing a blocked colon and renal shutdown, the doctors gave Keira 3 more hours to respond to their treatments before she would have to be admitted to the hospital.
Fortunately, with an hour to go (pardon the pun), Keira systems started working again. The turn around was miraculous. Instead of a semi-conscious toddler with droopy eyes, who sucked her thumb and barely looked around, within 2 hours she was up, trucking around, and back to her usual smiling self.
